![]() The bigger the corporation, the more riding on each and every launch, and therefore a need for blockbuster success and less tolerance for polarization. In my experience, at times the creativity of the artist or Perfumer is defined by the level of need for commercial success. Modern Muse le Rouge portrays a more sensual and slightly more provocative side of the muse, introducing red fruits and velvet amber and creamy textures to awaken a more dramatic experience. What followed the initial Modern Muse launch, is Modern Muse Chic and Modern Muse Le Rouge. In subsequent flankers, the brand seems to have taken concept of Muse further down a more innovative and creative path than the original. Modern Muse has a bit more of a classic style to it. When I think of the word Muse, ideas of creativity and Goddess come to mind. A lovely, and incredibly likeable fragrance that I would describe not necessarily as a trend setter, but as somewhat safe. ![]() The result is a beautiful fragrance that has the qualitative aura of a Lauder signature, and that fits the Lauder consumer. Layered, not linear, with crisp citrus top notes and clean ambery patchouli, musky and vanilla foundation, brilliantly put together with skill, love and attention. Not afraid to celebrate with petally floral bouquets of jasmine, lily and orange blossom. Modern Muse is a Lauder like scent, at once feminine and fresh, sophisticated, mature. They are artfully crafted, beautiful, full, bouquets of classic femininity. Lauder fragrances feel like Lauder fragrances. That is, a delicate balance between quality, commerciality and sophistication. Lauder certainly has an aura or a style, that attracts a particular consumer. The style whether it comes from an aura, structure or particular notes, becomes a recognizable signature associated with the brand. Many houses have what we like to call a thumbprint, a style so to speak. In today’s world of instant gratification and the glut of fragrance launches each year, many of which don’t live beyond a year, I respect Lauder for taking their time to make sure the launch will transcend fads and trends, to endure the test of time. Lauder certainly has a lot to live up to, and therefore riding on each new fragrance launch, when you take into account all of the preceding launch success that they have seen with hit classics like Youth Dew, White Linen, Private Collection (a personal favorite of mine), Alliage, Beautiful and Pleasures. Estee Lauder speaks of Modern Muse as “the first perfume launch by Lauder, since Beyond Paradise which launched in 2003”. They seem to take their time, prioritizing quality over quantity. They are not a house that launches a new fragrance every year. Until the 1950’s, women did not purchase fragrance for themselves, they only wore perfume that was gifted to them by their husbands, and reserved for special occasions.Įstee Lauder as a fragrance brand, is quite thoughtful and strategic about the way in which they launch fragrances.
